Windows 11 Is Coming - Here’s What You Need to Know!

Windows 11 is due to begin its rollout on October 5th and the PC world is excited. This version of Windows comes just as Windows 10 reaches about 4 years from retirement (October 2025).

While this upgrade won’t be quite as dramatic as Windows 10 was when compared to its predecessor, it is a major upgrade that promises several time-saving features to improve business productivity.

Any companies looking to upgrade in the coming months will want to be properly prepared for a smooth rollout. You can find tips on how to prepare for Windows 11 here. Below, we’ll detail some of the exciting new Windows 11 features and other important information.

We’ll start with a few of the frequently asked questions.

How Much is the Windows 11 Upgrade Going to Cost?

Windows 11 is free to most Windows 10 users. If you have a compatible computer that meets the requirements, then you will not need to purchase the OS.

Do I Get Access to Windows 11 on October 5th?

While October 5th is when Windows 11 starts rolling out that doesn’t mean that’s when you’ll see the upgrade available in your updates settings. To ensure an orderly release and improve the quality of the rollout, Microsoft rolls the upgrade out over several months.

Microsoft states that it will offer the upgrade first to “new eligible devices” and it expects all eligible Windows 10 PCs to have access to the free upgrade by mid-2022.

Once Windows 11 is out, you can check if you have it by going to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

What Are the System Requirements?

You may find that if you have an older Windows 10 PC it might not meet the minimum system requirements to upgrade to Windows 11.

You can find a full listing of the requirements here. The basics that your PC needs to meet include:

  • 1 GHz processor with 2 or more cores
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 64 GB or larger storage
  • UEFI, Secure Boot capable
  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
  • Compatible with DirectX 12 or later
  • High definition (720p) display

New Windows 11 Features to Get Excited About

Keep Work Organized with Snap Layouts & Snap Groups

One of the challenges of multi-tasking is keeping windows organized and easy to see. It can be frustrating trying to resize windows just to keep from having to click back and forth between apps.

Microsoft is addressing this in Windows 11 by introducing Snap Layouts and Snap Groups.

Snap layouts offers a choice of 6 different window organization layouts designed to optimize your screen space. You can save these layouts into snap groups that you can access later when you need the same configuration of apps and windows.

Teams Is Going to Make Connections Easier

Over the last 18+ months of the pandemic, connecting with people virtually has taken on a whole new level of importance. Windows 11 is going to amp up the connection factor with native integration of Microsoft Teams.

Teams recently pushed out Skype for Business (now defunct) and has been positioned by Microsoft as the ultimate communication tool for home and business users. In Windows 11 there will be a Teams icon on the taskbar that allows users to quickly connect by messaging, video, or voice call. No need to open the entire application!

Users can reach out to anyone for free from their desktop and even use Teams with SMS.

Zen-Like Look & Feel

Windows 11 is designed to be clean, streamlined, and distraction-free. You’ll see this Zen-like look at feel across several areas of the operating system.

For example, the Start menu has been stripped down for a less busy look and the icon moved to the middle of the taskbar. The master Windows search bar is also now located at the top of that Start menu.

Themes and windows will have a translucent look with rounded corners.

Widget Feed to Get to Important Information Faster

Windows 11 is introducing an AI-powered widget feed that you can customize with the information you use the most. This allows you to get to helpful info and apps faster by using the icon on the taskbar.

If you’ve ever seen the widgets interface on an iPhone, this will be similar, with the ability to use different widgets to build your own personalized information center.

Some of the feed options include:

  • Calendar
  • To-Do List
  • Weather
  • Traffic
  • Bing search
  • Stocks
  • News
  • Photos
